Like human fingerprints, no two zebras have the same pattern. In a running herd, their patterns become dizzying. One theory if that predators become confused by the swirling black and white stripes, thus allowing the zebras to make their getaway.
"Zebras are instinctively nervous and wary around water. The possibility of an ambush by a submerged crocodile or stalking lion is ever-present. The plains zebra is one of the most nomadic of grazers, ceaselessly in search of green pastures. They're always found in heards consisting of family members. I spent several hours at a water hole in the Ngorongoro Crater observing a multitude of ungulates quenching their thirst. Patience always pays off in enhancing my knowledge and understanding of the natural world. As an artist, it's my greatest privilege and pleasure." - Daniel Smith
We heard the orcas before we saw them. On the boat's hydrophone their squeals, squeaks, whistles and sighs sounded as if they were echoing in a cavernous space. Finally the mist lifted a little and we saw a phalanx of black dorsal fins not too far off - a family pod. Then the mist swallowed them up again. Perhaps one of the pods we glimpsed on that magical day of whale watching belonged to a whale that researchers have named Tsitika, an orca matriarch whose life history has given me a glimpse into the orca world. Tsitika and her family belong to the northern resident population of British Columbia killer whales. They have a remarkable social system that we are just beginning to understand.

I like the way the traditional works of man fit with nature, and nature fits with them. The wooden boat is almost as old as mankind. I like the partly deteriorating surface of this boat and the rickety boardwalk. The gulls also enjoy the place. - Robert Bateman

Throughout my life, the few times that I have seen a barn owl it has had an almost spiritual, unexpected quality. In each case, I have been prowling quietly in or near old buildings. Feeling a bit like an intruder, I have been startled by the silent flapping of the barn owl's wings. - Robert Bateman

"It was a rare and perfect night when icicles formed and cascaded from every cave and window ledge. What a time of great collecting and sword making!
There was something about that old root cellar door that sloped a path right up to our kitchen window. It had a magnetic attraction that could even distract our Nathan from a magical night of sword collecting!
It was from that vantage point that our little ones could see what was cooking for dinner or what cookies were coming from the oven... but I knew all too well what my dear little ones were really looking for! It wasn't until I went to the window and put my hand against there, that they were content to then be on their way and take a slide back down the old root cellar door!
It was a window forever covered in handprints... no matter how many times it was wiped clean the memories could never be washed away!" - Trisha Romance

"Fox Crossing"
Giclee Canvas Edition

Canvas Size: 24" x 36"
Some say that the cross fox, seen below, is so-named because it is a cross between a red fox and a black or silver fox, but a cross or black fox can occur any time in a litter of red foxes. Others say its name came from the dark area down the back and across the shoulders that forms the sign of a cross.
"Although all foxes are perky and elegant, this one was especially so, leading me to believe that it must be a female. I featured the luxuriant tail, a very important asset to all foxes. This one is graced with a superb and abundant appendage. The tail, when wrapped around a sleeping fox's face and paws, becomes a muff and comforter with great insulation properties, but is easy to breathe through" - Robert Bateman
Horses have shared the history of humankind since earliest times. My mother was born into a world where horses were virtually the only form of land transportation other than using one’s own legs. Those days are now past in almost the entire world. However, horses still have a place as a satisfying form of outdoor recreation. Great enthusiasm for the breeding and keeping of horses in many parts of rural North America remains to this day.
I saw this scene while driving through British Columbia ranchland one atmospheric winter day. The farmer had unloaded hay in a line from his tractor. This concentrated the feeding horses in a longitudinal clump. Since my
abstract painting days, I have been attracted to black and white interlocking shapes reminiscent of the work of Franz Kline. That, to me, created the power of that central cluster of horses which I see as almost one form. - Robert Bateman

Haida Spirit" by Robert Bateman is a striking giclee combining astract design and spiritual elements. The Haida are an Indian tribe of the Northwest. The conoe in this print, which measured 50', is a traditional Haida design, carved from a single ancient red cedar tree. When Bateman saw it, in his mind's eye, he pictured a raven, hovering above it. According to Haida legend, the raven is a wily trickster-transformer who created the world.

A young Siberian tiger frolics in the snow. Suddenly he stops. Is his mood still playful... or will he pounce? - Robert Bateman
Like all babies, most young animals play until they simply run out of steam, as was the case with this adorable lion cub. “This particular cub climbed the tree out of youthful exuberance. Then, not knowing what else to do, he promptly fell asleep." - Robert Bateman
"Running giraffes make elegant rocking strides which almost appear to be in slow motion. In this picture, I wanted a tapestry or mural look, flattened by a veil of dust. I was partly inspired by the lyrical rock wall paintings of the African bushmen." - Robert Bateman
"In the big-game country of Africa I am always aware of the huge, overpowering, blue sky, especially at places like the Amboseli plain in southern Kenya, shown here in Cheetah Siesta. I wanted to feel the presence of the sky in this picture, but I had to be persuaded by my wife, Birgit, that I could put the horizon as low as it is and still have room for the cheetah and the plain. I also had to resist the temptation to let more tall grasses stretch across the horizon, or to introduce a cruising vulture in the distant sky. By leaving it empty, the sky becomes as strong a force in the picture as the cheetah itself." Robert Bateman

"Tadpole Time"
Giclee Canvas
Renaissance Edition
180 s/n
canvas size 12" x 18"
Looking closer we are as fascinated as the young children with the contents of the jar. The title gives it away and we all fall back into the fond memories of childhood discoveries, and how magical nature truly is. For Robert Bateman, composition is everything, and "Tadpole Time" is a perfect example of this. The shadows fall to the foreground as the sun is hitting the inside of the fence. This accentuates the brilliance of this moment in time and in life. Our own fascination with this planet, this moment and each other seems to be recreated by this painting set in May, a time of rebirth, burgeoning growth, tender shoots and the exuberant activity in nature. - Robert Bateman
